Our premium, and most popular product. Element Membrane is light, yet rugged and strikes the ideal balance between performance and longevity. Developed in conjunction with Dimension-Polyant USA, Element is the culmination of three years development and now sets the standard for high-end sails which provide both high performance and longevity.
The Element Membrane is lighter than double taffeta resulting in a higher performing, more durable race product. When used for cruising, the sail handling also far exceeds the taffeta backed style sails.
Compared to standard external taffetas, water absorption is significantly less with quicker drying due to faster evaporation of moisture. In a larger yacht with furling sails this greatly reduces the opportunity for algae to grow.
The Element Membrane laminate is softer and more flexible than conventional laminates of the same weight which minimizes creasing and prevents film shrinkage. The random array filaments of the laminate provides increased abrasion resistance at a minimal weight gain. The Element Membrane™ fabrics allow for glued seams, resulting in less stretch under load
Cosmetically, Element offers the same appearance from side to side and the opaque finish allows for easier sail trim and virtually invisible seams, eliminating the traditional panelled sail appearance.
Our Expedition Sails are built to last and are the best choice when looking for local or offshore performance cruising sails. We currently have a number of clients sailing all over the world with peace of mind knowing their sails are not going to let them down. Due to the characteristics of Expedition Membrane, it is equally suited to superyachts as it is smaller cruising yachts.
The Expedition Membrane’ s laminate outer layer is a woven taffeta which provides strength and abrasion resistance with an inner layer of Mylar film which provides the stretch resistance. The combination of these two materials provide the foundations for the durability and strength that Expedition is renowned for. Expedition can be ordered in single or double-sided taffeta depending on your requirements.
Taffeta by its nature has limited water resistant qualities so needs to be air dried briefly to avoid mildew growth. The laminate can be treated with the world famous New Zealand “Wet & Forget” anti-mildew coating which negates the need to dry the sail out.
To maximize the durability and lifespan of our Expedition Membranes all seams are glued and sewn.
When considering a lighter weight, high performance sail for local club racing or high performance offshore racing, nothing beats our E-Tech Membrane series. What differentiates this from off-the-shelf cloth is that we design and manufacture the fabric from start to finish in our membrane plant, ensuring a product which is of minimal weight and maximum shape retention.
E-Tech is laminated using Mylar Film, which by its nature is extremely light making it ideal for those looking for a lightweight and high-performance sail and who are willing to compromise on longevity. Internal taffeta can be added to enhance durability if required.
Being completely non-porous, water runs off E-Tech Mylar upon contact.
Our E-Tech sails are all glued together, the only place you will find stitching is around the detailing of the components. The advantages of glued rather than sewn seams include the elimination of seam creep, meaning the sail retains its flying shape for longer, and a reduction in sail weight due to the elimination of seam reinforcement and large seam overlaps.
