If you want your covers to last longer, look brighter and cleaner, Dolphin have the answer.

Generally the process takes about a week, but it depends on factors like:

  • How well you have stored it.
  • How booked up the washing/drying facility is.

We will of course try our utmost to keep the time stated and keep you informed of progress. Off-Season Storage is free if we have washed your covers. Please note that oil can not be guaranteed to be fully removed.

Sail Overhaul

What we offer

Dolphin offer an all year round comprehensive washing and overhaul service, including:

  • Looking after your sails start from the day you take delivery.
  • Making sure that they are set correctly and properly trimmed will help extend their life.

Any Dolphin team member will be very happy to discuss any questions you have about settings and trim.

It is a proven fact that having your sails and covers professionally serviced each year will ensure you get greater longevity and will give you the confidence that you are less likely to have any mid-season issues.

All of our repair work is carried out to the highest standards by our team of dedicated sailmakers who always endeavour to repair the area as best they can.

However, with some types of repair we cannot always guarantee the final state of the sail, as the repair process may have effected the original design of the sail or cover shape.

This is mainly due to the different stretching characteristics between new and old fabric.

Washing will remove harmful salt crystals and other pollutants, this will prolong their life and give them a fresher look.

There is no known process in the world that will completely remove all stains and mildew without damaging the fabric.

Dolphin are one of the very few sailmakers in the UK who do their own washing and the only one in East Anglia who does.

We recognise that all materials need to be handled carefully, so our washing process does not involve using a large washing machine that could knock the stuffing out of the fabric.

Once each item is carefully dried it is brought in to the Loft to be fully inspected.

Highly experienced craftsmen and women will inspect each sail and cover – checking for loose or broken stitching, webbings, UV’s, batten pockets and hardware to ensure nothing is missed.

Work can be carried out immediately or if it’s looking like a big job we will stop and consult with the owner.

We are happy to undertake any sail survey work and provide a report – ideal if you are in the process of buying a boat or if you need a report for insurance purposes.

Once all the work has been completed we can store everything in our dry and warm facility.

We are pleased to offer free storage for any sail or cover that has been washed and overhauled.

Dolphin offer a collection and drop off service to many of the local marinas, boatyards and Clubs. If you are a bit further a field we can arrange a carrier.

Dolphin’s tips for sail care

  • To help with the longevity of your sails and covers it is best to remove them from the boat during the winter period.

  • Sails and covers that are left on while the weather is cold, wet and damp are more prone to dirt and may even start to suffer from mould and mildew, in turn leaving unsightly marks which are hard to remove.

  • Did you also know that some insurance policy’s insist that all sails are removed from the rig whilst the boat is laid up ashore?

Off-Season Storage

Dolphin are committed to provide a complete one-stop service to meet our customers expectations and needs. Dolphin are happy to store your sails & Covers over the winter season. Stored in a fully insured, dry and secure area of our Mersea Loft.

SailKote Plus Sail Treatment

SailKote completely dries in seconds to a hard, ultra-slick, hydrophobic dry coating that bonds tenaciously to almost any surface. It does not attract dirt, water and contaminants that eventually degrade performance—unlike oils, silicones, and waxes.

Watch a short Sailkote video explainer:

SAILKOTE Plus is specially formulated with Dupont Krytox, an easily applied environmentally friendly translucent liquid lubricant specifically designed for marine use.

It is a derivative of McLube, with an anti-mildew additive that fights mildew before it starts.
